For instance, typing ‘M’ gives ‘2’ as output, or typing ‘5’ gives ‘q’ as output. Fixes for “If Keyboard Typing Wrong Letters, Numbers, or Characters” issue
The Keyboard is one of the most reliable components of a Computer/ laptop, and thus issues with it can create havoc for the users.
FIX 1: Install the latest Windows Update:
First, it is advised to install the latest Windows update and check whether the update improvements help you fix the problem. For doing so,
- In the desktop search bar, type Settings and open the relevant search result.
- Now navigate to Update & Security.
- On the next window, click on the Check for Updates If there’s any pending update available, it will start the auto download and installation process. Let the process complete on its own, taking the required time.

- On the Word options window, navigate to the left-pane menu and click on Proofing.
- From the set of choices, select AutoCorrect Options.
- Here you need to select and delete the AutoCorrect entry responsible for converting the particular keys into unmatched output.
FIX 4: Check your language settings:
As per some of the suffered users, their Keyboard’s wrong key output issue was resolved by changing their language settings. For doing so,
- Firstly, go to the desktop search bar, type Language, and open Language settings from the search results. (Note down or remember the language mentioned below the Window display language section for further usage).
- On the next window, navigate to the option Spelling, typing & keyboard settings.
- Now scroll down the menu till the last and select the option Advanced keyboard settings.
- On the Advanced keyboard settings menu, set the language below Override for default input method as same to which we found in the first step.

FIX 5: Reinstall the keyboard drivers:
Uninstalling and then reinstalling the keyboard drivers have helped a lot of suffered users to get along the keyboard keeps on typing the wrong characters. You can try the following fix with the steps mentioned below:
- Firstly, in the desktop search bar, type Device Manager, and open the relevant search result.

- Firstly, from the desktop search bar, open Settings.
- Now navigate to Update & Security.
- From the left-pane menu, select the option Troubleshoot > Additional troubleshooters.
- On the next window, scroll down, click on Keyboard and then select the Run the troubleshooter tab.
- Wait for the scanning process to complete on its own. Follow the on-screen instructions as required.
- Once done, restart your system and check whether the said keyboard issue is resolved or not.
FIX 7: Try basic and random workarounds:
If none of the above fixes worked for you, then it is quite evident that the issue is not related to any software glitch. In such a case, you can try the hardware solutions mentioned down below:
- In case you are getting similar output despite whichever key you are pressing (for example, the output every time is ‘K’ despite the key you press). Here in case, ensure that the particular key (say K) isn’t stuck. If yes, then unstuck it to resolve the issue.
- If your Keyboard is attached via USB port, check whether there’s any issue related to the USB port which might end up causing the wrong key output.
- For Laptop users: The NumLock + FN combination when turned ON can create keyboard issues for some users. Hence it is advisable to disable the effect by pressing NumLock + FN simultaneously. Alternatively, you can also try the Ctrl + Shift combination to check if you have by mistake toggled a scrambled keyboard.
