Fixing internet ping spike can be a bit technical but it isn’t rocket science either. There are a few methods you can use to solve this problem when you encounter it. You can conduct a ping test to know the normal ping duration between a server and your computer or restart your devices i.e. your modem, computer, and router to resolve the ping spike.

How to fix Internet Ping Spikes?

When ping spikes are caused by your computer or the server you’re connected to, there are some methods you can use to solve the problem. Below are some ways to fix internet ping spikes.

Do a ping test on your computer

Doing a ping test helps you to know the average ping time between your computer and a specific server. Follow the steps below to do a ping test.

Locate the Windows key on your keyboard, press it, and the letter X key

Pick Windows PowerShell {Admin}

Click on Yes

Type “ping 8.8.8.8” but don’t add the quotes

Press the enter key and allow the test to run

It will show you the average, maximum, and minimum ping time

This test gives you the knowledge of the normal ping time you should expect. This knowledge is very useful for solving ping spike issues.

Know your network details

Be informed about your network type and address. You should know if it is IPv6 or IPv4. This information is needed to fix a ping issue. Do the following to get this information.

Locate the Windows key on your keyboard, press it, and the letter X key

Pick Windows PowerShell {Admin}

Click on Yes

Type “ipconfig” but don’t add the quotes

Press the enter key

Note down your IP address, active connection, and which IPv you’re using

Do loopback Ping

Doing a loopback ping helps check if computer and network drivers are working accurately. Here is how to do it.

Locate the Windows key on your keyboard, press it, and the letter X key

Pick Windows PowerShell {Admin}

Click on Yes

Type these commands one after the other but press enter after typing anyone and allow it to run completely before typing the other one.

“ping loopback” (don’t add the quotes)

“ping::1” (don’t add the quotes)

Note down each one’s ping

Be informed about the ping time between your modem, router, and your computer

To know this, do the following.

Locate the Windows key on your keyboard, press it, and the letter X key

Pick Windows PowerShell {Admin}

Click on Yes

Type “ping IP address” (don’t add the quotes and put your real IP address there)

 Press the enter key and wait for the results to show

If the ping is low, then you have a good connection with your router and modem. If the reverse is the case, troubleshoot the router and modem.

Start your internet again

When you notice ping spikes between router, modem, and computer, put off the connection and start it again. Put off your computer and unplug the router and modem. Wait for 5 or more minutes before setting up the connection again. After setting up the connection and it is working again do a ping test to know the ping between your devices and your computer. This will show you if the issue has been resolved or not.

A slow internet connection is pretty annoying and it reduces one’s productivity. Ping spikes are sometimes the cause of this. They can happen a few times and that is not much to worry about but when they keep re-occurring and disrupting your internet connection then you will need to fix it.
